Located in the heart of Detroit’s entertainment district and just a block away from Fox Theatre is the Fillmore Theatre. This elegant theater space is the perfect location for performances and private events. While it has undergone several name changes over the years, it remains an iconic part of Detroit.

History

The Fillmore Theatre was built in 1925 as part of a larger building construction. The entire building is 12 stories and covered in a terra cotta facade. The theater is located at the back of the building and is six stories tall. The famous architect C. Howard Crane designed the theater in the Renaissance Revival style. The building sits on land originally occupied by the Grand Circus Theatre.

Originally, it was called the State Theatre. Then, in 1937, it became the Palms Theatre, later shortened to The Palms. In 1983, the theater closed and sat vacant for several years. However, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, helping to protect it. In 1989, the theater saw new life by getting turned into a club, dance, and concert hall. In 2007, Live Nation bought the theater. This is when it became the Fillmore Theatre we know and love today.

Theater

Today, the Fillmore Theatre has a seating capacity of 2,200. The main floor has 700 seats, and the mezzanine and balcony have the remaining 1,500 seats. The seating features classic red velvet upholstery to match the stage curtains and carpeting.

Restoration

After Live Nation purchased the theater, it shut down operations for several months to perform some much-needed restoration and renovation work. The original seating capacity was 3,000. However, many of the floor seats were removed to create a standing-only area. Fresh carpeting and a new chandelier were added to the lobby. Murals were added to either side of the auditorium. The murals were a part of the original theater design but had degraded and then were covered with curtains. The murals were added back with the careful study of pictures of the original paintings. Finally, the stage received new curtains for up and down stage.

Events

The Fillmore Theater hosts various events that include concerts, comedy, plays, and special events. These events are open to the public with the purchase of a ticket. With state-of-the-art lighting and sound, performers sound their best no matter where you sit in the theater.

Private Events

The theater is also available for private event rental. This historic and elegant space is perfect for hosting weddings, anniversaries, corporate events, social gatherings, private concerts, holiday parties, or any other celebration. It can accommodate groups in sizes from 25 to 1,850 guests. The staff can provide custom menus, mixology, and decorating services.

How to Visit

If you want to see the splendor of the Fillmore Theatre, you must purchase tickets for a show. While Fillmore does not have a website where you can purchase tickets, you can do so on the Live Nation website

Purchase tickets to a concert at the Fillmore Theatre and have a unique experience in a beautifully restored historic building.
