You do not have to go to New York City to experience the best that Broadway has to offer. The Fisher Theater in Detroit is one of the most prominent theater houses outside of NYC. For over 90 years, locals and visitors have enjoyed Broadway-caliber performances.

History

The Fisher Theatre opened in 1928 as a vaudeville and movie house. It had 3,500 seats and featured an ornate Mayan theme trimmed in gold and ivory. The theater was a spectacle, with live banana trees, a goldfish pond, and wandering macaws. Theater patrons could feed the macaws by hand. Chicago-based architectural firm Anker S. Graven & Arthur G. Mayger designed the theater.

It went through a significant remodel in 1961 that removed the Mayan theme. Replacing it was a modern theme that featured dark woods and earth-toned marble. A large bronze statue of a woman standing on a white marble platform was added to the lobby. The seating capacity was also reduced to 2,089 seats to create a more intimate experience.

Design

The interior of the Fisher Theatre is luxurious and elegant. Marble, walnut paneling, crystal, Indian rosewood, and bronze adorn the theater’s interior. The theater's seats and matching stage curtain are upholstered with olive velvet. This creates a glowing golden hue throughout the theater.

Shows

The Fisher Theater regularly hosts Broadway’s biggest and brightest stars. It hosted the world premiere of Hello Dolly, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweet Charity, and Golden Boy. Check the Fisher Theatre calendar to find a performance that you want to see.

How To Visit

To visit the theatre, you must buy tickets for a show. You can do so online or in person at the box office. The ticket box office is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. Included in the price of your ticket is parking at the Fisher Theatre’s parking lot or garage.
