Ford Piquette Ave Plant Museum

As the birthplace of the Model T, the Ford Piquette Ave Plant Museum is a historic building that played an important role in the establishment of the American automobile industry. Today, this beautiful brick building serves as a museum, private event space, and community gathering place. Step back in time as you walk through American automotive history.

History

This unassuming brick building is one of the most significant buildings in automotive history. Built in 1904, it is 402 feet long, 56 feet wide, and three stories tall. Today, the third story is closed to the public. Henry Ford had the Ford Motor Company specifically build the plant to assemble the B, C, F, K, N, R, S, and T models. This is also where Henry Ford began experimenting with the first versions of his famous assembly line.

In 1910, Ford moved to its new facility at Highland Park. The Piquette Ave building was sold to Studebaker. It was home to Studebaker until 1933. It was then home to Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company and Cadillac Overall Company until 1989.

The Heritage Investment Company took over management of the building. In 2000, it sold the building to Model-T Automotive Heritage Complex, Inc. This was when it took on the name Ford Piquette Ave Plant Museum. Extensive efforts were taken to restore and preserve the building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and became a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

Museum

There are over 40 early automobiles in the museum’s collection. In addition to automobiles, you can see Henry Ford’s office and the room where the Model T was designed.

Public Events

The museum hosts events that are open to the public throughout the year. Many of these events are themed to celebrate the rich heritage of Detroit and Ford. Events vary in style. Some have a block party vibe with live music, food, drinks, and Model T rides. Others are more educational, with industry and history experts giving informative talks.

The base price includes admission for three people. Rentals start at $150 for the first hour and $50 for each additional hour.
