Located in Midtown Detroit, the Garden Bowl has been a favorite pastime for locals for over 100 years. It is one of the oldest continuously operating bowling alleys in America. The outside of the building is on the National Registry of Historical Places. While the bowling alley has changed hands several times over the years, it has retained the charm that makes it a unique and enjoyable experience.

History

The Garden Bowl first opened in 1913 with ten lanes. The two-story destination featured bowling on the first floor and a billiards room on the second. In 1926, the second floor was renovated to remove the billiard tables and add 12 more bowling lanes. Then, in the 1960s, the bowling lanes were modernized to include automatic pin setters and underlane ball returns. In the 1990s, the lanes were removed from the second floor, and the space was turned into a dance club.

Bowling

Today, there are 16 bowling lanes at the Garden Bowl. Because of the limited number of lanes, reserving a lane in advance is best. There is a maximum of six bowlers per lane. While during the day, it is family-friendly, the bowling alley implements a 21+ policy after 8 p.m. You will enjoy the modern take on bowling with special events. For example, go bowling with the daytime lights turned off and laser lights on. A fog machine adds ambiance, and a live DJ spins hot tracks.

Dining

Located within the bowling alley is a full-service bar and lounge. Order a bite to eat at Sgt. Pepperoni’s. The menu includes pizza, calzone, chicken tenders, wings, and salad.

How To Visit

The Garden Bowl is open on Sunday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. From Tuesday through Saturday, it is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. You pay by the hour and per lane. Pricing depends on the day of the week and the time of day. Bowling prices range from $20 to $35.
